Academic Programming

Academic Days

Academic day sessions are held monthly. The residents are responsible for determining the content of the sessions. The academic day program runs concurrently with Grande Prairie and Red Deer through videoconferencing. Attendance is mandatory for residents who are on specialty or family medicine rotations within 350km of the regional centre. Residents are released from their clinical duties for the day.

Rounds

Weekly rounds are hosted by the residents, together with invited faculty.

Half-day Back

Following the Regional Family Medicine 4-week rotation, residents return to that practice for a half-day clinical session each week, except during the week of the academic day.

The purpose of the half-day back is to maintain the resident's focus in Family Medicine and to allow exposure to the principles of continuity of care. The timing of the half-day back is negotiated between the resident, the family medicine preceptor to ensure a mutually convenient time. Residents will not return for half-day back during rotations outside Red Deer or Grande Prairie.

Resident Presentations

In addition to presentations at weekly rounds, residents must develop two projects during their two years:

  1. BEARS exercises (5 in total)
  2. Practice Quality Improvement in Year 2

Workshops

Regular workshops lasting 1-2 days supplement the academic activity and provide programming difficult to deliver during the monthly academic day. Workshops also provide an opportunity for resident interaction and are often combined with social events. Some workshops are offered in conjunction with the University of Alberta urban program or with the Rural Alberta South.

Attendance is mandatory for all residents with the program paying any needed travel or accommodation expense.
