Evaluation

Evaluation occurs at regular intervals throughout the residency and is essential for measuring the resident's performance and progression through each rotation and year.

Each rotation has a set of objectives, which represent a guide of what is relevant to be learned during a rotation, and the evaluation will be based on the resident's ability to meet a reasonable number of these objectives. The resident and their preceptor/evaluator will be given a copy of the objectives and an evaluation form. The resident should expect an early meeting with their preceptor to discuss the objectives. There should also be a mid-point meeting to discuss progress towards meeting the objectives and an end of a rotation meeting, be it Family Medicine or a specialty, to go over the evaluation. The evaluation forms will be regularly updated to clarify which objectives are priorities. Residents will have significant input through the residency program committee ensuring rotation objectives are concise and achievable.

In both the first and second year, the resident's faculty advisor will meet with him/her on a regular basis to go over their evaluations on the various rotations. There is a requirement that the resident must meet with their faculty advisor at least every 4 months.

Residents are encouraged to make notes regarding progress on the objective-based evaluation form during the rotation, as this will assist with the final evaluation. The preceptor will complete his/her copy of the evaluation form at the end of the rotation. The evaluation will be discussed with the resident at that time, and the resident should sign on the last page indicating agreement with the evaluation. The preceptor will then send the completed form to the unit office.

The resident is responsible for returning completed teaching site evaluation to the unit office, together with any travel claim forms.
