The Rural Alberta North and Rural Alberta South units of the two Family Medicine departments strive to provide medical graduates with extensive experience with the clinical conditions faced in rural practice, and trainees with the knowledge and skills required to meet these service demands and grounding in the realities of rural practice.

Residents' Comments

Our Residents are some of the best judges of the training experience they receive. Here is what they have to say:

  • "With the hands-on experience, you're getting the best exposure working in a rural facility."
  • "The amount of procedures you will get to do in this program far exceed anything you'll get to do in an urban program."
  • "Isolation wasn't even a concern for me. Everyone was so welcoming and so friendly and wanted to make sure I was having a good experience."
  • "I like the fact that it [the program] was based on procedures and learning; not based on 'skut work or slave labour'".
  • Keen preceptors who are willing to go that extra mile to help you."
  • "You are treated as a physician from day one and they value your contributions to care for the patients."
