Academic Programming

Academic Days

Academic day sessions are usually held on the first Thursday and Friday of each month. The morning is a videoconference held either in Medicine Hat, Lethbridge or Calgary. The residents of the urban and rural streams have determined the content of the sessions and their delivery. The academic day program runs concurrently over the 2 years. To minimize travel, academic presentations occur on the first Thursday and Friday, and occasionally Saturday, of each month. Presentations are made available on the Internet.

Journal Clubs & PBSG

Residents must atend twelve journal clubs sessions in the first year, and an additional nine in the second year.

Half-day Back

The purpose of the continuity experience is to maintain the resident's focus in Family Medicine and to allow exposure to the principles of continuity of care during their first year of residency. The timing of the half-day back is negotiated between the resident and the Family Medicine preceptor. Residents do not return for half-day back during Family Medicine rotations outside of the regional centers nor while on vacation. Completion of the continuity experience is a program requirement for graduation.

Research

Residents must write up and present a project during their residency. The project is presented either by poster or oral presentation at the Family Medicine Research Day in Calgary in March of each year.

Workshops

Regular workshops lasting 1-2 days supplement the academic activity and provide programming difficult to deliver during academic days. These topics include communications skills, Evidenced-based Medicine, Palliative Care, and Geriatrics. Workshops also provide an opportunity for resident interaction and are often combined with social events. Some workshops are offered in conjunction with the University of Calgary urban program or with Rural Alberta North.

Attendance is mandatory for all residents with the ARFMN paying any needed travel or accommodation expense.

Other

Other events are scheduled throughout the year in association with the urban program at the University of Calgary. These include Spring and Fall Family Medicine Resident conferences, the annual Christmas Party, and resident Research Day.
