EvaluationEvaluation occurs at regular intervals throughout the residency and is essential for measuring the resident's performance and progression through each rotation and year.
Evaluation forms are e-mailed to the preceptors and posted to the Public Folders section of Microsoft Exchange for Resident use. Residents are required to establish a learning contract at the beginning of each rotation.
The resident's performance is evaluated at the mid-way point and the end of each rotation by his or her preceptor. Academic performance in the more longitudinal components of the programme (i.e. Behavioural Sciences, Palliative Care) is evaluated at longer time intervals. All evaluations must be signed by the resident to ensure that they have been read and must be certified by the preceptor as having been reviewed with the resident. The completed and signed evaluations must be returned to the programme office 10 days after the end of each rotation. Each resident is responsible for the return of the completed preceptor, rotation and resident evaluation forms.
The unit director reviews the completed evaluations. These evaluations then become part of the resident's academic record, which is the property of the University. The student's academic record is the source documentation for the unit and the basis for Family Medicine Program directors' recommendations for Certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada and for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. At regular intervals, the overall progress of each resident within the unit is assessed.
The regular evaluation by residents of their preceptors, teaching sites and the presenters for academic sessions is of great importance to RAS. This feedback provides essential information to ensure that the unit is responsive to the residents' expectations and that their learning experience is improved wherever possible.
The residents evaluate preceptors and sites at the end of each rotation. The completed preceptor evaluation form is forwarded directly to the RAS Unit Director, who reviews this important feedback from residents. Anonymous summaries are provided to preceptors.
Rotation evaluations are submitted to the unit office, which maintains a teaching dossier for each rotation. Residents may also evaluate the academic days and other core educational events.
